Day 2: SIGIRIYA / POLONNARUWA / SIGIRIYA Click here to readmore

Enjoy the 8th wonder of the ancient world, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an important UNESCO world heritage site and testament to the sophistication of ancient construction. Be blown away by this architectural masterpiece with fountains that still work after 2500 years. Give yourself time to fully grasp the beauty of the ancient frescos of half-naked royal women on the rock face, the fortifications around the rock and the grand city built in the 5th century BC. Enjoy the breathtaking aerial view over jungles, rural villages and giant lakes and mountains after going up more than 1000 steps carved into the rock face and reading ancient poems on the mirror wall.

After climbing down, experience the authentic life of villagers with a special lunch in the Hiriwadunna village before returning to the hotel’s luxury shower and pool. Walk around the village and the lake watching birds and wildlife as well as bullock carts transporting goods to the market.

Walk around the giant walls of an ancient 7-story high imperial palace complex and enjoy the beauty of the large Buddha statues in Gal Viharaya (Rock temple). It is an unforgettable place to spend your sunset, wondering among the ruins of Medirigiriya Vatadage, Kiri Vihara, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya, Polonnaruwa Vatadage as well as a huge man-made lake, Parakrama Samudraya. Maybe the world famous toque macaques’ monkey population may help you around the city to navigate. 🙂

Day 3: SIGIRIYA / DAMBULLA / KANDY Click here to readmore

Refreshed from a good night’s sleep you will check out of the hotel early to visit another UNESCO world heritage site. Count the Buddha statues and explore the caves carpeted with fresco paintings at Dambulla UNESCO world heritage cave temple. Wander around the colorful wall paintings in the world’s oldest cave temple. Make friends with the thousands of monkeys living in the temple mountain, but don’t feed them. Wander around the caves covered in beautiful art and enjoy the scenic view outside.

After lunch you are driven to Kandy. Another ancient capital, UNESCO world heritage city, an important Buddhist centre in the world and also home to lots of ruins, the city invites you for a walk. Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka before the country had to hand over its administration to the British. The city is also home to the remnants of the former royal palace and lake, which sits around the magnificent Temple of the Tooth. Enjoy the traditions and customs going on around you after a short break at the hotel. The three Temple museums are interesting places to visit, including the small royal museums next to the former queen’s chamber. Observe the fine timber carvings on the pillars of the former royal court before walking into the outside compound of Hindu temples. Depending on your preference and availability of time, you can be driven to the historic temples of Lankathilake, Gadaladeniya and Ambekka to enjoy the wonders of timber and rock carvings of ancient Sri Lanka as an optional program instead of a short city tour.

After breakfast you will visit the Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya. Walk around one of the best and oldest botanical gardens in Asia. Learn about the plants and flowers that make this tropical paradise so unique. The garden walkways provide you a beautiful path across plant life that has existed for centuries in this place next to the majestic Mahaveli River.

Take the train from colonial Peradeniya Railway Station at 12.31 and arrive at Nanu-Oya Railway station by 15.55. Enjoy one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, crisscrossing through mountains, rovers, jungles and mist covered tea estates. Riding on this train track originally built by the British to transport the world famous tea is a unique experience. We will give you lunch packets to eat during the journey. You will meet back your driver with the bags at the Nanu-Oya Railway station to be driven to your hotel in Nuwara Eliya city. Enjoy a cup of the tea at the colonial Grand Hotel or go for a walk through the city’s central park before dinner.

Let your eyes be captivated by the beautiful Devon and St. Claire’s waterfalls on route to Negombo.
