Ancient city of Trincomalee (Gokanna)

Trincomalee (Gokanna ancient Buddhist city) sits on one the world’s finest natural harbours which were used to anchor the allied Asian navel fleets during World War 2. One of the most strategically important cities in Asia due to its location and religious importance.  Trincomalee is one of the most important places for Hindu’s as it is considered that its Shiva temple is in the site of Trikuta Hill in the Hindu text Vayu Purana. Today a large Hindu temple is situated on a cliff facing the sea. You have to pass through the Old Portuguese and Dutch fort Frederick to get to this temple. Herds of wild deer walking around is a common sight here.

Trincomalee is situated close to the world famous Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches. The town has a lot of charm and a melting pot for Buddhist and Hindu cultures. You can find number of ancient Buddhist heritage sites as well as plenty of nature and wildlife. Seruwawila Rajamaha Viharaya from 2nd century before Christ, an ancient Buddhist temple close by houses the forehead bone of the Buddha.
